Surrey 5K Road Race Championship 2006

County Medals for Road Runners.

The County 5K Road Race Championship was held on the usual hilly course in West Wimbledon on Sunday 13th August in conjunction with the Belgrave Harriers 5K Open Race. The unseasonal cold and the heavy rain made the race harder than expected but Walton’s three representatives excelled themselves.

Jon Hamblen was in touch with the leaders for the first 3K until three athletes broke away. Jon finished strongly and almost caught the third placed man before the finish but had to be content with 4th place in 15.51. Fortunately for Jon the open race winner was not Surrey qualified so Jon was the third Surrey runner home and picked up the county championship bronze medal.
James Harvey ran steadily for 13th place in the race (9th in the Surrrey Champs) in 16.23 and Jon Brine ran 17.32 for 36th (26th in the Surrey champs), Jon finished very well, picking up half a dozen places in the last kilometre.

The team competition was three to score and Walton’s three did well enough to claim the bronze medals behind Belgrave Harriers and Ranelagh Harriers
