Southern Men’s League 14th July at Portsmouth

The senior men’s team travelled to the Royal Navy stadium in Portsmouth for the fifth round of Southern League matches. Walton produced their best performance of the season in what turned out to be a very close match. With five events left Walton were locked together in a three way tie for first place with league leaders Cambridge Harriers and the Royal Navy. Going in to the final event, the 4 x 400m relay Walton and Royal Navy were tied on 123 points with Cambridge just behind but still within reach. The Navy won the relay so Walton finished 2nd, oure highest placing of the season and handed Cambridge their first defeat in two years. The result moves Walton up to 13th in the league of 25 clubs with one match remaining.
The track events started well with Adam McCarthy placing 2nd in the 400m hurdles A race. In the absence of our other regular hurdlers Richard Drew ran his first hurdles race for ten years and won the B race.
It was a good day for our hurdletrs with Adam and Stuart Fawcett winning the two sprint hurdles races.
Ramon Wright ran a pb to come 2nd in the 100m, given the same time as the winner, and Stuart Channon in his first Southern League match for the club came 3rd in the B event.  Ramon finished 2nd in the 200m with Adam McCarthy winning the B race.
Alex Ferrelly ran an ambitious first lap in the 800m but held on well for 3rd place. Jon Hamblen ran within himself for 3rd place in teh B race then immediately lined up in the 5000m. He finished 2nd with James Harvey 3rd in the B race, Jon then ran the 1500m with Jon Marsden picking up 3rd A and 2nd B. The steeplechase saw James again with Jon Brine finishing 2nd and 3rd overall for nine points out of ten.
Craig Timmings won the pole vault with Jon Ladley 2nd B string. Adam and Craig were 2nd A and 3rd B in the high jump and Stuart Fawcett and Stuart Cahnnon gained two 3rd places in teh triple jump. Steve Mills and Jack Marchbank long jmumped.
Josh Davis did all four throws supported by Adam and Jon Ladley with no place lower than 3rd in the eight throws.
The final league match is at Reading on Saturday 4th August
