IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – VACATING STOMPOND LANE

As foreshadowed in the AGM announcement sent out earlier this year, Elmbridge Council requires the Club to vacate Stompond Lane prior to the completion of the new facility at Waterside Drive, scheduled for completion at the beginning of September this year.

We have endeavoured to remain at Stompond Lane as long as possible but have now been informed that the Club must vacate by 24 April. Following this, facilities for training will be available at St George’s College (in Addlestone), at certain times. We are waiting for confirmation of certain details from the school which should be provided once term re-starts after Easter.

A further announcement with more details will follow. Please also contact your coaches or team managers for further details on planned training times and locations.

In the meantime, here is a photo of the new track at Waterside Drive taking shape:

Track Etiquette Guidance

Track Etiquette Guidance

The following is a guide on the behaviour and conduct that should be adhered to by athletics track and field users:

Always run in an anti-clockwise direction. The only time it is acceptable to run in another direction is if you are doing shuttle runs or drills as part of a session or during warm up. Drills can also be done on the high jump fan or the infield if they are not in use.

Warm up on the outside lanes in a clockwise direction or on the infield outside the football pitch, taking care not to cross the throwing sectors if in use.

Treat the track like a road, look both ways and make sure it is safe to cross.

Recovery after reps should be in the outside lanes or on the outside of the grass (again, avoid crossing the throwing sectors).

Do not cross the throwing sectors when in use. Walk around the back of the cage, circle and runway.

Coaches should let the other coaches present know what they are planning to do during the session and agree any lane use.

If you are standing still, walking or jogging slowly and someone shouts ‘Track’ at you then step off the track if you are on the inside lane or move immediately to the outside lanes.

Throwers must ensure that no-one is in the throwing sector when they are throwing. Other athletes must ensure that they do not walk or run across the throwing areas when throwing training is in progress.

Coaching Biography – Jack Rutherford

Background
I have been involved in athletics with Walton AC for over 20 years, initially as an interested helper, then an official, an athlete and then a coach. Having played team sports until my mid thirties I started road running then became a track and field athlete as a veteran.

Coaching
I have been a qualified endurance coach for 15 years or so. I am currently part way through the UKA level 3 qualification. I currently coach middle and long distances at the club on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and some Sundays.

Other Involvement
I am currently chairman of the club committee, team manager of the senior men’s track and field team and the men and boy’s cross country teams. I am a qualified track and field judge and a timekeeper. I also edit the clubs website and still manage to compete as a veteran.
