Four Walton South of England Champions!

There were more stunning results from our junior athletes at the South of England age group Championships at Lee Valley last weekend.

Stealing the show again were the Agyei-Kyem sisters, both taking gold in their respective long sprint events, Jeslyn running 39.88s for 300 (U15) and Cedelle, setting a new club record of 57.20s over 400 (U17). Younger sister Annalise knocked a huge half second off her 200m PB in the U13 time trials, running 28.99s into a stiff headwind, while Emma Fisher ran a good 29.29s in the same event.

Ben Marks secured a superb gold in the U17 men’s steeplechase with 4:39.73, and George Sudderick did the sprint double in his less preferred events of 200m (gold, 22.60s) and 100m (bronze, 11.39s).

Away from the medals, Jon Awuah (U15 Boys 300), Emma Horsey (U17 Women’s 300 hurdles), Charlotte Vaughan (U17 Women’s 800), Ollie Coppellotti (U17 Men’s 800), Michael Cottrill (U17 Men’s 1500) and Ross Hurst (U15 Boys’ 1500) all performed brilliantly in their respective finals, with Ross scoring a PB of 4:32.62. With the wind conditions, PBs were scarce, but there were also strong performances for Rachel Pharaoh (U17 800), Caitlin Paul (U15 200) and Charlotte Maxwell (U15 200). Hayden Evans (U13 200) was unlucky to miss out on a medal, recording the fourth fastest time (into a 4m/s headwind!) in the U13 boys’ 200.

Out in the field, Amy-Lee van der Westhuizen held the fort with a magnificent 34.09m throw in the U15 girls’ hammer, finishing 6th.

With competition now winding down, we are already excited to see what the future holds for these incredibly talented young athletes!

YDL LAG – Final Match Report

Worthing, the last match of the YDL season, saw a smaller than usual band of Walton Athletes competing in the warm and sunny conditions on the coast.

A number of great individual performances throughout the day, but by far the biggest and best was the team spirit and commitment of everyone who encouraged, supported, had fun and did events they have never done before “all for a point”. And every single one of those points counted and mattered. So a huge thank you and well done to you all.

In what was a very closely contended day with only 10 points separating the top 4 teams at one point, we came away with a very respectable 3rd place! This means provisionally we finish second in the league and have secured promotion next season, so some hard training for next year is needed!!

A very big thank you to all the officials and helpers in particular Debbie, Jack and Christian who went out of their way to be there on the day.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our team captains, Jack Gemmell and Georgia Russell for doing a sterling job all season, Andrew for his constant presence and guidance on match days and last but not least Kathryn Paul for her wonderful organisational skills and calming presence at each match, she has made it very easy for me to pick up the reins.

Again a big well done, you should all be very proud of yourselves you have represented Walton very well, have a great Summer.

Superb Schools’ Results from Walton Athletes

Jeslyn Flies to 3rd on UK All Time Lists to Win Schools’ Gold

There were some superb performances from our young athletes as the sun shone on Alexander Stadium last weekend. For all but three of our athletes, it was their first experience of the prestigious English Schools’ Championships, and they all competed to their absolute best and delivered performances to be proud of.

Gaining selection for this event is a huge achievement in itself, especially when you look at the quality of some that missed out. We are proud of each and every one of you.

Outstanding performance of the weekend must go to Jeslyn Agyei-Kyem for her superb 39.20 in winning the Junior Girls’ 300m. This time, a Championship Record, places her 3rd on the UK all time rankings, and is a Middlesex County record, although Jeslyn  competes for Surrey within the Schools’ system.

In the Senior Boys’ hammer, Sam Mace again exceeded 60m with a superb 61.38m to claim the silver medal, losing out by just over a metre to Berkshire superstar Oliver Hewitt.

Another silver medal performance was George Sudderick, who broke the Surrey County 300m record with 35.12, to go 2nd on the UK all time lists. Unfortunate that the new UK record holder was in the same race!

Cedelle Agyei-Kyem claimed a well deserved bronze in the Inter Girls’ 300m with 39.45 (having recorded 39.36 in her heat). She topped this performance with a gold medal in the Surrey Inter Girls’ relay team.

Other finalists include Georgia Russell (4th, Junior Girls’ Shot with 11.15m), Ben Marks (5th, Inter Boys 1500 Steeplechase with 4:36.11), Tom Cursons (6th, Inter Boys’ 400m hurdles with 57.80 and 57.31 in his heat) and Nicola Bell (7th, Senior Girls’ javelin with 40.02m). Sam Bishop (Inter Boys’ 400 hurdles), Tyler Panton (Inter Boys’ 100m) and Philip Kastner (Inter Boys’ 100m hurdles) all ran superb times, but in incredibly strong events sadly failed to qualify for their finals.
