Southern Mens’ League 29th April at Barnet Copthall

Walton’s senior men’s team opened their track and field season at Barnet on Saturday with the first round of Southern League matches.
An excellent team performance overcame the lack of a number of athletes missing due to injury or other committments and the team did well to finish second behind Epsom & Ewell and ahead of Aldershot, London Heathside and Thurrock.

Multi eventers Adam McCarthy, Jon Ladley and Stuart Fawcett between them scored half the teams points but there were also some very good individual performances. Highlight of the day was probably Craig Timming’s new personal best of 4m10 to win the pole vault, Stuart Fawcett won the B string event.
The first track event saw the return of a fit again Andrew Kennard who finished 3rd with Stuart Fawcett 2nd in the B race.
Adam McCarthy and Stuart Fawcett came 3rd and 1st in the two sprint hurdles races.
Richard Drew and Alex Ferrelly doubled up in the 800 & 1500m with Alex , in his first senior match, recording a new personal best in the 800m.
Phil Lacey  had his fastest seasonal opener for a few years in the 400m with Jon Ladley running faster still in the B race.
James Harvey came 2nd and 3rd in the 5000m and steeplchase races with John Redshaw in his first 5000m race coming 3rd in the B race.
Courtney Codrington jumped 11m for the first time to win the B string triple jump with Stuart Fawcett 3rd in the A event.
Adam McCarthy threw the A string shot and discus backed up by Dave Moles and Robin Roach. Kevin Shepherd was 4th in the A string Javelin with Jon Ladley throwing a new pb to win the B string. Jack Rutherford and Craig Timmings threw the hammer to complete the throws team.
Going into the final event, the 4 x 400m relay Walton needed to finish in front of Aldershot to clinch 2nd place in the match and although Aldershot were ahead at the final changeover, a storming last leg from Adam McCarthy saw Walton home in front.

Southern Womens League 22nd April at Milton Keynes

With the sun shining, Walton athletic club ladies headed to Milton Keynes in the minibus for the first league match of the season.

For the junior girls, Ellen Sellwood and Natalie Jones set high standards at the start by winning the A and B string 100m.  Ellen then went on to gain a personal best in long jump and Nat produced a personal best in the 800m.  Abigail Wroth made her debut performance in Southern Women’s League competing in 75m hurdles and throwing a personal best in the javelin achieving 1st in the B string.  Carla Letheby won A string javelin by throwing a magnificent 19.45m which is a personal best.  Britt Hijkoop, in her first Southern womens league match,  won B string in the shot  and discus, and jumped 3.45m in the B string long jump.

In the senior ladies competition Helen Williams continued last years’ success by winning the long jump, 100m and 200m.  Kaylee Price had an enjoyable afternoon too, by winning the B string in high jump, 200m and long jump.
Rosie Marino had her first competition as a senior lady gaining a personal best in 300m hurdles and clearing 1.50m in high jump.
Debbie Singleton had a good day in the A string throws with two 2nd places and a third and Jo Regan won the B hammer and was 2nd in the discus, as well as hurdling and triple jumping.
Montana Woodruff placed 2nd in the B string 80m hurdles and picked up two 3rd places in the A javelin and B triple jump.

Natalie Warren just missed a pb when finishing 2nd in the B 800m then produced one in the 1500 in 5.17 for 3rd place. Jo Locker ran 5.12 for 3rd in the A 1500.
By the end of the afternoon, Walton AC ladies had gained 157 points placing them 4th in the competition, although had they had enough athletes to fill all the events they would very likely have won the match.  We hope to have more athletes at the 2nd match which is in Brighton on 20th May.
