Training Group and Coaching Updates

The club is sad to announce that Ben Kennard will no longer be able to coach at the club on a regular basis for the time being. Walton AC is extremely grateful to Ben for his efforts and work to date in establishing a very successful group of junior athletes with a wonderful, motivated and friendly dynamic. We wish Ben all the best in his new career- but fear not, we will still see him around at the club, most likely firing a starting gun..!

Ben’s group will be continued by Paul and Jemima, who will be offering the same coaching to separate groups at slightly different times. Head over to the updated coaching page to be reminded of the coaching groups on offer.

Coaching Biography – Jack Rutherford

Background
I have been involved in athletics with Walton AC for over 20 years, initially as an interested helper, then an official, an athlete and then a coach. Having played team sports until my mid thirties I started road running then became a track and field athlete as a veteran.

Coaching
I have been a qualified endurance coach for 15 years or so. I am currently part way through the UKA level 3 qualification. I currently coach middle and long distances at the club on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and some Sundays.

Other Involvement
I am currently chairman of the club committee, team manager of the senior men’s track and field team and the men and boy’s cross country teams. I am a qualified track and field judge and a timekeeper. I also edit the clubs website and still manage to compete as a veteran.

Coaching Biography – Debbie Singleton

Name:- Debbie Singleton

Background
I have been involved in athletics, mainly as an athlete since I was 13yrs old. I came to Walton AC in approx 1986 after a break from athletics for about 10 years.
I still see myself essentially as an athlete. I train 3-4 times per week and compete for the senior ladies team in Pole Vault and throws, I also compete in veterans athletics at local, national and international level.

Coaching

I am a very part time coach, with Level 2 Group Event Coach qualification.
I am happy to give my time if I can also train at the same time. Presently I coach Tuesday evenings and assist with throws training on Sunday mornings. I have a good knowledge of throws techniques and of general fitness and conditioning required for good standard athletics. I’ve obviously also got many years of experience as a reasonable standard athlete competing in sprints, throws and jumps.

Other Involvement

I am the Hon Secretary of Walton AC and take responsibility for organising most of the home matches at the track. I am also a qualified Field Official at level3 and organise officials for home matches and training for new officials. I also team manage the senior part of the Southern Women’s league together with Hannah Gray who looks after the juniors.

Coaching Biography – Andrew Kennard

Name:- Andrew Kennard
Contact Details:- 020 893 1921 or 07734 298 495

Email:- Andrew.kennard49@gmail.com
Background
I have been involved in athletics for over 3 decades, starting my career as an 800m/ 400 Hurdler for Enfield Harriers, before moving to Woodford Green AC in the mid eighties.  I moved to Walton AC 20 years ago and concentrated solely on the 400 hurdles, which still today remains my specialist event (and I am still the club record holder!).
During the later part of my running career I was fortunate to be coached by one of the world’s most travelled and respected coaches, Jim Alford, the 1938 British Empire Games Gold medalist over 1500m and first National Coach for Wales in 1948.
Coaching
Currently a level 2 sprints coach, I now look after the senior sprinters and hurdlers at the club.  The squad train on Tuesday/ Thursday evenings and Saturday or Sunday mornings.  Throughout my athletics career I have gained widespread knowledge of general conditioning/ fitness programmes and ‘technical’ drills to enable athletes to fulfill their potential. Any athlete is welcome to join the squad, as long as they have the desire and passion to work hard.
Other involvement
I am also a qualified marksman and track judge, and when fit and if time permits compete in veterans competitions.
