YDL UAG Stevenage

Thank you to all those who made the trip north to Stevenage for the first match of the YDL Upper season.
Ahead of the match, it was sad to see Jimena Stynes pulling out due to an ankle injury. Hopefully, later YDL matches will see her back and competing. The match also saw some possible injuries for both Malo Sandon and James Skeet. Likewise, I wish them a speedy recovery, and hope to see them back in action soon.
Alongside some very kind weather there was some great victories, personal bests and some nail-biting finishes. New personal bests for an opening match of the season was particularly great to see.
As ever, Jacob kicked off WAC proceedings with the long jump, but this season he will be accompanied by James. Jacob achieved a very respectable 5.62, placing him in second place. His assault on six metres will have to wait for future events. James in the U17 leapt to an equally respectable 4.54 metres.
WAC’s multi-eventer Tobi kicked her season off with first place in the women’s shot with an 8.73 throw. She then followed this up with another top spot of 19.86 in the discus. Tobi then earned further valuable club points with 14.83 in the 100m.
In the men’s 100m, WAC entered a highly impressive field, and the athletes did not fail to deliver. Brook cruised into the U20 first place with a blistering 10.84, and Xav did the same in the U17 category with 11.43. Malo was hot on their heels with an impressive second place and 11.98 in the B String. The club’s non-scorers Luc and Kaan also had great runs, but due to some technical error, their times were not shown on the results PDF.
Luc returned to the field for his first run-out over 400m. As it was his first outing in the event, he was a tad concerned with his A String ranking. His concerns were unfounded by securing second place and a great time of 58.82. The same distance saw Jeslyn run a very good 62.39 in the women’s event.
Proceedings for the club then focussed on jumps. First up was Tori-Ann taking top spot in the high jump with 1.55. Luc returned to the field in the triple jump with a mighty second place 12.34 jump, knocking almost a metre off his previous PB. Malo also set out his stall in the event with an impressive 11.79 ensuring a well deserved first place in the B String. Cyrus was not far behind with a great distance of 11.76.
Up next were WAC’s formidable sprinters in the 200m. In the A String age groups, Brook U20 and Xav U17 once again cruised to top spots. Brook in 22.04 and Xav in 23.24. Kaan competing in the B String secured second place with a great 25.82. In the women’s event, WAC was equally strong with the sister combination of Jesslyn and Annalise. Both finished in strong positions, Jesslyn grabbing third spot in the A String with 26.63 and Annalise crossing the line in second B String spot with 27.51.
Due to the injuries mentioned above, WAC could not field a relay team, so the last event for the day was the men’s 800m event. George U20 was a hair’s breath away from securing top spot at 1:58:38. This I am sure was tempered by a new PB for him at that distance. Not to be outdone, Lewis U17 over the same distance shaved two seconds off his previous PB with 2:17:49.
Thank you to all of the above athletes in securing third spot for WAC at the event. A big thanks also to Barney and Martin for helping to officiate events. Results to follow on event two.
Kind regards,
Clint
