YDL LAG – Match 3 Report

Match 3 Report – Winchester

On a scorching hot day, the YDL LAG athletes performed brilliantly at Winchester on Sunday. Despite the heat there were a number of impressive performances and many PBs. Jasmine De la Touche performed well during her first time out this season for the team, winning the shot put. Running in the middle of the afternoon in very high temperatures, the distance runners were performing in difficult conditions, however, they rose to the challenge and gained many PBs, notably: Jack Gemmell, Ross Hurst, Sam Davidson, Megan Coffey and Sally Mammen and Poppy Huxtable, Jacob Gelona, Callum Stewart in the 800m; Reuben Leyland (having earlier run a PB in the 200m), Tom Jones, Chris Vaughan, Lani Caldwell and Imogen Burton all defied the temperatures to run scorching 1500m and big PBs. Not to be outdone, the sprinters were also flying with Josh Punton and Tyler Panton in the 200m and Emma Fisher in the 150m gaining PBs and in the field events there were big PBs for Luca Soave in the discus and Amy Van der Westhuizen in the Javelin.

The performance of the day went to Emma Horsey who ran a sizzling 300m to break the Club Record in a time of 42.6 following on from a blistering 200m earlier that day that takes her to the top of the Club Rankings in this event as well! She is also awarded the female athlete of the match alongside Finn Punton for his 800m run in 2:24.8 which takes him to the No.5 spot in the Club Rankings.

The afternoon was completed with a fantastic set of relays – the U13 boys brought the baton home in the 4x100m in 56.4 for 3rd place as did the U13 girls in a time of 59.6. The U15 girls went one better for a second-place finish in 54.3 whilst the U15 boys won in a time of 48.6. The 4x300m squads didn’t disappoint either, both winning their races in a time of 3:02.6 for the girls and 2:58.6 for the boys.

A big thank you to all the athletes who stepped up and covered an event to get the team valuable points. The points difference between the top 3 clubs was very close throughout the day so every point really does count! Thank you to the officials for braving the heat all day and without whom we wouldn’t be able to compete and to Andrew for giving up his weekend to coach! Thank you too, to all the parents who helped the officials, supported and got the athletes to the right place at the right time with the right number on – you were amazing again!

Huge congratulations to all the athletes who competed so well! The official results should be out soon on the YDL and Power of 10 websites. We are now looking forward to the final match of the season on Saturday 15th July in Woking.
