Rosenheim League Match 1 – Sutton

The first Rosenheim match of the season saw a small team of Walton athletes turn up to the not-so-local David Weir leisure centre in Sutton.

Despite the low numbers, a series of good performances and many PBs led to good team positions by the end of the evening.
Starting with the women, there were strong performances in the 200m from Emma Horsey and Jemima Hobbs running 27.4 and 30.6 respectively into a noticeable headwind, Emma coming 3rd in the scoring race. Emma also secured 1st place in the 400m with a very good time of 60.7. Jemima also ran the 400 non scoring with a time of 66.0.

Rachel Pharaoh was the sole female entrant in the 1500m and ran a good time of 5:14.8 in blustery conditions. Debbie Singleton claimed a valuable 3rd place in the 4KG hammer, throwing 19.43 and then 25.29 with the 3KG hammer non scoring. Debbie was also juggling officiating duties for multiple events – thank you Debbie! Nicole Riehl also threw the 3KG hammer non scoring and landed 27.02m for a PB in her first competition.

These performances ensured 4th place on the night – just missing out on third place by 1 point, so well-done ladies.

The men also had a very successful evening given the small team size and track proceedings kicked off with a PB and a 2nd place in the 2km steeple chase by Robert Smith, followed by a brilliant run in the 800m from Michael Cottrill. Michael started strongly and was in 2nd place after the first lap. At 500m he attacked the leader, but the Epsom athlete responded well and held on. Michael bided his time, remained strong and with 100m to go he kicked hard and passed the Epsom athlete who had nothing more to give. Michael ran home in 1st place taking almost 2 seconds off his PB in 2:04.8. A very mature run from the U20 athlete in his first 800 of the season.

Alex O’Neill doubled up in the short sprints running a PB of 12.4 in the 100m (into a headwind) for 3rd place and 26.9 in the 200 also for 3rd. Matt Pharaoh ran a steady 3km race in 9:50.8 and came in 3rd in the final event of the evening securing vital points for the overall standings.

Then we have Martin Willis, who ran the 1500 in 6:14.0 (3rd), threw the discus 18.72 (3rd), threw the javelin 21.95 (3rd) and tried his hand at the high jump (1.0m – also for 3rd). Lots of points scored during a busy evening for Martin and all results were PBs.
This means the men finished the evening in 2nd place overall by just 2 points – so every performance counted.

Well done and thank you to every athlete that attended and competed. Thank you also to Debbie and Christian for helping officiate (and giving me an easy ride as stand in team manager).
Sorry if I have missed any results or any details are incorrect. If so, please let me know and I will amend what is necessary.

YDL LAG Match 1 Report

The first match of the YDL Lower League took place at Walton Athletics track on the 28th of April.

Conditions were described as “challenging”, with the high winds forcing cancellation of the Pole Vault, and providing very tough going for all the athletes, officials, coaches, helpers and supporters.
A huge well done to everyone involved, especially the first time competitors, who threw themselves into all their events with enthusiasm, smiles and “a never give up attitude”, wearing their Walton Vests with pride.

Many PBs were achieved throughout the day, despite the wind, and lots of individual performances that showed that hard work in training pays off!

A special mention goes to Sian Popham who fell in the first lap of the 800m (running with a broken wrist) picked herself up and ran with such fierceness and determination to see her come 2nd!! Well done Sian.

The last events of the day “The Relays”, as always, proved to be super exciting and fantastically supported by athletes, coaches and families! Many of the new athletes had never done relays and with only a limited time to prepare, all acquitted themselves amazingly well. Walton were extremely competitive considering we had a number of middle distance athletes “sprinting” ! A huge well done to the girls U15 4x 300 who ran their hearts out and managed to snatch a first place, with some incredible team spirit and support willing them home.

The results were super close and less then 10 points separating the bottom 3 clubs, which on this occasion, unfortunately put us last. However having seen the determination, enthusiasm and grit on display I am sure we will improve at each match going forward.

Lastly a big thank you to the Coaches, the officials, the volunteers, the athletes and the support crew of family and friends, as none of these events happen without you!

For those of you new to competing and the club you did yourselves proud and to those who have been here before, well done, you all set a wonderful example of team spirit and inclusion.

A very happy and proud Team Manager!

Ebbisham League – Match 1 Report

Walton youngsters victorious in first Ebbisham Boys fixture of the season at Sutton.

The lead kept changing throughout the day, but in the end Walton prevailed and held off the stiff challenge from home club Sutton & District.

27 athletes made the trip and did not disappoint with numerous personal and seasons bests throughout the day and some of those athletes, having their very first experience of competing in a WAC vest.

The Punton twins, this years boys joint club captains, Josh and Finn led by fine example and between them recorded five personal bests. Jacob Thomas showed huge improvement with three personal bests. Felix Decker and Christopher Vaughan both ran personal bests in 1500 and newcomer Ben Wells looks like a great addition to the club with a solid 26:4 run in the 200.

The u13 boys performed admirably with James Queen and Isaac Amankwaah both performing well in the sprints, Friso Boomsima and Luke Morgan secured maximum points in the hurdles and Christian Boyd having his first outing over 1500 metres had a superb run, recording 5:23:2.

Six U11s (Jake Meyburgh; Matthew Wellinger; Max Giles; Adam Palmer-Ali; Reece Morgan and Seb Clark) made the journey and all performed exceptionally well against tough opposition in the 75/150/600 metres & Long Jump.

Special thanks should go to our one and only official Jo Gelona who gave up her time and track judged all day. Thanks also to the parents who came along and supported.

Next fixture is on Sunday 2 June.

Full results will be posted on Power of 10 shortly.

Lily B League ’19 – Match 1 Report

Lily B League – Match 1 – 22nd April 2019 – Report

The sun shone for our first Lily B event on Easter Monday at Epsom and Ewell athletic track. We had a brilliant turnout of girls ranging in age from U11 to U17 and everyone performed really well and should be very proud of their performances.

There were some amazing results with a large number of wins and personal bests.

In the Under 11s Kitty and Poppy Scott beat their previous bests to achieve PBs in 75m, 600m and Long Jump. Sabina Coppola-Johansen had a storming race to win the u11 600m. Two other sisters Olanna and Chia Brown ran for the first time for the club and had a really successful day. We had an u11 relay team who following a bit of trackside training excelled at their first ever relay race. Great performances all round by our youngest members you should all be very proud.

Other PBs came in the 100m from Jeslyn Agyei Kyem (U17), Sophie Cunliffe (U17) Sian Popham (U15), Annalise Agyeu Kyem (U15) and Louisa Amoroso (U15) and in the 1500 from Tate Green and Bella Wiles (U15). What an achievement!

We had some spectacular wins in the relays too with our U17 and U15 girls in well executed and extremely exciting to watch races.

Off the track our throwers surpassed themselves with wins from Georgia Russell in discus, hammer and shot! Eva West and Amy Lee Van der Westhuizen also won their Hammer events and Alex Brewis won the U15 Discus. Well done girls.

I would like to mention each and everyone of you but this would be a very long report.

And finally a huge thanks to our dedicated officials on the day – Debbie Singleton, Christian Burgar, Matthew Maxwell, Tracy Heron, Chris West, Tony Popham, Stuart Russell, Keith Williams and Clare Mammen.

And our lovely parents who grouped together on the grass bank and made the whole day really enjoyable and memorable.

Full results are on Power of 10

Once again well done all and thank you. Looking forward to the next Lily B at home on June 1st.
