YDL LAG Match 1 Report

The first match of the YDL Lower League took place at Walton Athletics track on the 28th of April.

Conditions were described as “challenging”, with the high winds forcing cancellation of the Pole Vault, and providing very tough going for all the athletes, officials, coaches, helpers and supporters.
A huge well done to everyone involved, especially the first time competitors, who threw themselves into all their events with enthusiasm, smiles and “a never give up attitude”, wearing their Walton Vests with pride.

Many PBs were achieved throughout the day, despite the wind, and lots of individual performances that showed that hard work in training pays off!

A special mention goes to Sian Popham who fell in the first lap of the 800m (running with a broken wrist) picked herself up and ran with such fierceness and determination to see her come 2nd!! Well done Sian.

The last events of the day “The Relays”, as always, proved to be super exciting and fantastically supported by athletes, coaches and families! Many of the new athletes had never done relays and with only a limited time to prepare, all acquitted themselves amazingly well. Walton were extremely competitive considering we had a number of middle distance athletes “sprinting” ! A huge well done to the girls U15 4x 300 who ran their hearts out and managed to snatch a first place, with some incredible team spirit and support willing them home.

The results were super close and less then 10 points separating the bottom 3 clubs, which on this occasion, unfortunately put us last. However having seen the determination, enthusiasm and grit on display I am sure we will improve at each match going forward.

Lastly a big thank you to the Coaches, the officials, the volunteers, the athletes and the support crew of family and friends, as none of these events happen without you!

For those of you new to competing and the club you did yourselves proud and to those who have been here before, well done, you all set a wonderful example of team spirit and inclusion.

A very happy and proud Team Manager!
