ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP GATESHEAD 1ST and 2ND JULY

Three Walton athletes were selected to represent Surrey and Middlesex  in this year’s Championship. These Championships are the largest of their type in the world with over 1000 athletes taking part from all over England. They are televised on Sky TV.

Held over two days the athletes travel as a team with their County and stay in the local university accommodation.

In the senior women’s discus Carla Letheby finished in 4th place with a throw of 37.09m. This was a good result for Carla as she beat a number of girls ranked above her in the national rankings including the number two in the country.
In the senior women’s triple jump Lisa O’Brien narrowly missed the cut to finish in 10th place with a leap (3 in fact) of 10.77. Any disappointment was soon forgotten with a gold medal in the 4×100 relay when the Surrey team triumphed over Lancashire in a close finish.
In the intermediate men Hugo Fleming battled his way through the heats to make the final of the 800m. In a fast race Hugo finished 6th in a new pb of 1.54.92. Hugo has been injured for most of the season so this is a tremendous result for him.
Well done to these athletes.
