SURREY COUNTY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP 16TH-17Th FEBRUARY SUTTON

Walton athletes competing in this year’s championship had a good weekend
winning 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 2 bronze.
Carla Letheby won
the bronze medal in the senior women’s shot.
In the under 20 women’s age
group Sinead O’Bien won the gold medal in shot. Sister Lisa did the double
winning the high jump and triple jump. Lisa also won the silver medal in the
60m hurdles and the bronze medal in the long jump.
Sophie Mace competing in
the under 15 and under 17 shot also did the double winning both events. The
under 17 result was impressive as Sophie threw a pb to take the title from
the winner of last year’s under 15 champion. Even more impressive was the
under 15 result where Sophie set a new championship record.
In the under
15 boy’s age group Sawa Yamakawa won silver medals in the long jump and 60m
hurdles.

Well done to all our athletes.

Another Surrey league win for men

There was another excellent performance from the men and boys cross country team last Saturday on Epsom Downs.
The junior race was first over a 2.5 mile course. Calum Beauchamp was again the 3rd under 15, this time he was only one second behind the 2nd U15 and 6 seconds behind the U15 winner. Edmund Hunter ran well for 7th U15 and in the under 13 results Oliver Coppolletti was a very good 4th.
In the senior race over 2 laps of the same course Jon Hamblen recorded another win, almost half a minute ahead of 2nd place.
Conor was the next Walton runner home in 12th place and was the first under 20 finisher. Gareth Creagh, in his first league match of the season, was next in 15th followed by Andrew Crookes 22nd, and Warren Kidgell 27th. Duncan Woolmer, Jon Ladley, Hugo Fleming (3rd under 20) and Rob Marcus were seperated by only twelve seconds in 34th, 35th, 37th and 38th positions, and the tenth and last scorer was Chris Ness in 56th. Following Chris home were James Harvey 66th (having suffered a calf injury early in the race), Richard Drew 74th, Kyle Treherne 80th, Wai 86th, Jon Cook 94th, Bart 102nd, Dan Harry 109th, Chris De Mauny 111th, Laurie Avadis 115th and Malcolm Howard 132nd.
The team won a close match from Clapham, with Kingston 3rd and only 23 points seperating the first three clubs. We remain in first place in the division after two of the four league fixtures. (The next Surrey League match is in January).
