Surrey Track & Field Championships 13th/14th May at Kingston

Only 12 Walton athletes entered the Surrey Champs this year but they produced a decent haul of medals and personal bests.

Star of the weekend was Carla Letheby. Carla entered all three throwing events in the under 13 girls age group and came away with two pb’s and three gold medals. On Saturday Carla won the shot with 7.64 and then improved her pb four times in the javelin finshing with 24.81. On Sunday she came back to win the discus with another pb of  22.75. In doing so Carla set a new championship best performance, beating the existing one, which had stood for five years,  by over two metres!
Also in the under 13 age group Lauren Highton improved her best 800m time to 2.46.68 for 5th place in her heat.

Nathalie Jones ran 13.55 to finish 2nd in her heat of the under 15 girls 100m and came 6th in the final, Nat also ran 2.39.64 for 5th place in the 800m heats.

Claire Pearce ran a pb of 5.54.30 to finish 3rd under 20 women in the 1500m.
Helen Williams was 3rd in the senior women’s 100m (13.59) and 4th in the long jump (5.64). Jo Locker finished 6th in the senior women’s 800m (2.24.55)  closely followed by Nathalie Warren who improved her best time to 2.25.81 for 7th place.

In the under 17 men’s age group Alex Ferrelly knocked 5 seconds off his best time for 800m to finsh 4th in his heat, and then improved the time again to 2.05.56 for 5th place in the final.

Craig Timmings was the most successful senior man, his 4.00m vault gaining him a silver medal. Adam McCarthy was the busiest with 5 events producing a bronze medal and a pb (17.16) in the sprint hurdles, three 4th places, vault 3.10, shot 9.78, Discus 30.52 and a 6th in the 400m in 53.34.  Phil Lacey improved his seasons best to 55.03 for 7th in the 400m and Chris Wright ran 24.35 in the heats of the 200m.
The only disappointment of the weekend was the low number of entries from Walton athletes. Based on the results from the  Walton Open the previous weekend Walton athletes could have won another fifteen medals.
